The 150-year-old Söderskär lighthouse is located in the Porvoo archipelago. In the middle of a nature preserve, landing on the island is prohibited to protect rare sea bird species. However, guided tours make an exception.
I visited Bengtskär lighthouse last year and ever since have really wanted to see Söderskär as well. And oh it was just as I imagined!
So how to get to Söderskär?
You can take a boat from Vuosaari, Helsinki. It takes around 20 min. to get to Vuosaari from the centre of Helsinki by metro. The boat leaves from Aurinkolahti (which is a 15 min walk away from the Vuosaari metro station) and the boat ride lasts between 1h-1,5h. The ticket price is 53 euros and you should book your ticket in advance.
At the island you can enjoy the café and history tours or relax in the wood-heated sauna, built in 1876. When you are on the island, out on the sea, there’s not much you can do about anything – but that’s exactly what is so calming and beautiful about the whole place.
